Pet Nutrition Factors

Our nutritional assessment starts with learning about your pet. There are six major factors we consider in evaluating the needs of your furry friend - all of which can be entered easily online. If you need help answering questions, our team of veterinary nutritionists have provided detailed resources to help.

Breed

Some breeds have specific considerations that require greater proteins sourced from specific meat or specific ingredients that should be included or omitted to help with predominant health-related concerns that are prevalent with that breed.

Age

There are several life stages for a dog starting with puppy, sometimes divided into young puppy and junior puppy, then adult, senior and elderly. These life stages have different time spans depending on the size and breed of the dog. For example, a Chihuahua is a puppy for 10 months and a Labrador is a puppy for 14 months.

Sex

The expected weight and nutritional requirements can vary depending upon the sex of the pet. There are different expectations for energy usage and caloric intake based on sex. Whether the dog has been spayed or Neutered also affects diet, as spaying and neutering causes hormonal shifts that affect metabolism and appetite.

Body Condition

This is an important component to assessing the pet’s current condition and is best conducted by an animal health professional because pet parents often erroneously believe their dog is at ideal weight when, in reality, a veterinarian would categorize the pet as overweight for their age and breed.

Region

This is also a consideration for certain ingredients like omegas and proteins if the weather fluctuates with dramatic seasonal swings or is relatively consistent year round.

Activity Level

This is very important when calculating the feeding guidelines for each pet. It is important to properly determine the Resting Energy Rate (RER) and also the Daily Energy Rate (DER) to arrive at the optimal feeding amounts to maintain ideal body weight and condition.
